The first service of St. James was held on the Second Sunday after Trinity in Liberty, Missouri in 2019. The introit of the Mass that Sunday perfectly captured it: Psalm 18 THE Lord was my refuge and my upholder; and he brought me forth into a place of liberty: he delivered me, because he delighted in me. Ps. Ibid. I will love thee, O Lord my strength: the Lord is my rock, my fortress and my Saviour.
It was the Lord who pointed us to this historic building built in 1840 and rebuilt in 1913. The building had been a church until 1986 under the auspices of the Roman Catholic Diocese. Then it morphed into several businesses until finally we made St James in Libery our home.
Holly Michael, as a realtor, located this place and soon it won the heart of all the members. St. James on Holmes Road was sold and the Liberty property was bought in August of 2019. All the items including the stained-glass windows were moved and the entire ornaments of the church were installed within a week so that the Mass would not be interrupted between Sundays. Our dear members will recall cleaning the construction dust off the pews each Sunday. Lots of love and labor poured into this sanctuary for two years. When the church was ready for primetime, Christmas 2019, the pandemic hit and brought the entire world to a standstill. We continued to keep the church doors open. In those uncertain times to whom could we go, except to the Lord?
The church was consecrated in September 2021 during the Synod and now is the Anglican Cathedral.
The work continued and the basement was restored to accommodate Holy Grounds Coffee shop to fundraise for the repair of the steeple. The brick masons were called to tuckpoint the tower of the church which had loose bricks. Now we are in the process of installing a pipe organ in memory of Kate Daniels, thanks to the gift of Mr. James Daniels, the Chancellor of our Diocese.
With new members, we have just begun in a new location, the faith once delivered unto the saints – faith as the Lord taught, as the Apostles preached and as the Fathers of the church Preserved. 342 N Water St is the historic church again!
